A 2023 Memo to the Aspiring Solopreneur

< BACK TO ALL POSTS

Five years have elapsed since I ventured into my sideline gig, which eventually evolved into a fully-fledged business. This journey, while riddled with challenges, has been one of the most fulfilling phases of my life. The unparalleled freedom, the enriching interactions with clients, and the pure joy of the work itself make it all worthwhile.

Now, as I pause and reminisce about this incredible voyage, I am inspired to draft a letter to my younger self. And in sharing this, I hope to galvanise every budding solopreneur out there to persevere with grit and grace.

Dear Future Business Trailblazer,

I feel your anxiety, your excitement, and the weight of your dreams. Those big aspirations, combined with the overwhelming chaos of starting, are all too familiar. Remember that time you'd scroll through Instagram, awestruck by the achievements of entrepreneurs? Feeling dwarfed by the sheer magnitude of their success?

I've been there too, plagued by self-doubt, the classic imposter syndrome, and endless apprehension about the unknown. But here's the silver lining: it is challenging, yet not insurmountable. This journey is not always draped in splendour; there will be rough patches. Still, when you look back, the fruits of your labour will outweigh those transient hardships.

Realise this – your potential is boundless. In the next half-decade, you'll marvel at your accomplishments. The pride that flows from knowing that you single-handedly built something valuable is unparalleled. You're not pretending; you're paving your own authentic path.

But, let's face reality. Not every day will sparkle with success. Some days, you'll want to call it quits. Such moments of despair are part and parcel of the entrepreneurial voyage. Yet, every storm will pass, ushering in a period of calm and clarity. Whenever darkness descends, remember to lean on those who've walked this path. Their wisdom, guidance, and empathy will be your guiding stars.

The ebb and flow of business are inevitable. When work dwindles, don't panic. Instead, harness these moments to rejuvenate, delve into projects close to your heart, refine your brand, or simply revel in some much-needed relaxation. Understand that these fluctuations are blessings in disguise. An influx of work translates to financial growth, while lulls provide personal growth and introspection opportunities.

The maiden year of your entrepreneurial expedition will be a whirlwind of emotions. Yet, it will cement your belief in your prowess. Stumbles are part and parcel of this journey. But remember, with each fall, you'll rise stronger, wiser, and more resilient. This iterative process of making mistakes and learning is the crucible where the best version of you is forged.

So, embrace the challenges, the learnings, and the transformations that the initial years usher in. Stay rooted in your vision, and remember that every obstacle is a stepping stone towards your dream.

Warm wishes,

Your 2023 Self.
